Cars are the problem not a solution?

Whilst new engine developments are a good thing, it’s about time we started to wake up to the fact that unless we reduce the number of vehicles on our roads we will continue to destroy our environment at an unacceptable rate.  The benefits of reduced car use or car bans are massive; we will see reduced fuel usage, less CO2 pollution, the return to local shopping, improved public transport infrastructure, less accidents, safer streets, and the regeneration of local communities.
The main initiatives for environmental groups such as Eco Island should be to encourage the Isle of Wight council to reduce car usage, put limits on car ownership, locally tax car size, restrict road access, introduce road tolls and eventually establish an Island totally free of unnecessary road vehicles.
Sites like this must support car reduction, or dare I say it, the banning of cars from Island roads all together. If Sark can do it why can’t we scale it up to show the rest of the UK what is really needed.

At the moment the public transport infra-structure on the island doesn’t support totally car-free travel and can be quite expensive.  Does anyone know if there are nay plans to introduce Greenback Card benefits for public transport e.g. trains and buses?  I know we can already get discount on the hover.

There is already a 10% Greenback discount on the Freedom 30 and 90 day passes when you buy online with Southern Vectis. At this time they are unable to offer discounts on the buses due to the way the ticket machines work but when they introduce contactless technology (like London’s Oyster Card) we will look at ways of expanding the Greenback offer.

Yes cars are the problem and a pity not to have a cohesive plan for “giving travellers a choice”.
I guess one step would be to get St Mary’s Hospital, the council and other significant employers to add to a database that outlined the journeys of their employees so x to/from Freshwater to St Marys, x to/from Sandown to BAE etc etc and then we can plot out some public transport that led to freeing up our roads and reducing our Island carbon footprint.
Who can approach these employers?
